Smelling Bottles

Description

Smell is the sense most closely tied to memory, and the Smelling Bottles give children an early, structured way to notice and name it. The set consists of twelve bottles, each filled with a different natural material and sealed with a colour-coded, porous lid, a design that lets scent escape gradually for the child to detect while holding the fragrance steady over repeated use.

Working with the bottles, the child pairs matching scents and orders them by intensity, training the olfactory sense the way the Sound Boxes train hearing or the Touch Tablets train the fingertips. The colour-coding on the lids supports self-correction, so the child can check their own pairing and gradation without adult intervention. Beyond refining a sense too often overlooked in early education, the material builds the habit of close, patient attention: noticing what is faint, what is strong, and what belongs together, a habit that carries directly into later observational and scientific work.
