Introduced once a baby can sit up independently, at around 6 to 12 months, the Object Permanence Box with Ball is a Montessori classic built around one of infancy’s favourite discoveries: things that disappear can reappear. The child drops a wooden ball into the opening on top of the box, watches it vanish from view, then opens the drawer to retrieve it, echoing the delight of peek-a-boo but placing the entire sequence of cause and effect in the baby’s own hands.
Because retrieving the ball requires opening the drawer rather than watching it roll straight back out, the activity asks a little more of the child with each round, reinforcing hand-eye coordination, fine motor control, and the sustained focus so central to early Montessori work. Babies will often return to this exercise many times over, repeating it until the concept is fully their own.
The box is crafted from birch plywood, valued for its fine grain and durability, and finished in eco-friendly paint. Wipe clean with a soft cloth only. Never soak in water.
