The Introduction to Decimal Numbers introduces children to the written symbols of the decimal system, giving them the numerical language to match the quantities they have already come to know through hands-on bead work. Presented in a compact, open wooden box, the material pairs each place value with its own colour-coded card: green for the unit, blue for the ten, red for the hundred, and green again for the thousand, following the Montessori colour convention that carries through every decimal system material.

Once a child has built physical quantities with loose beads, bead bars, squares, and cubes, this card set gives those quantities a name. Laid alongside the corresponding bead material, the cards let a child visually and physically match a symbol to its quantity, reinforcing the place value structure of the decimal system and preparing the ground for reading and writing large numbers. It is a small material with an outsized role, forming the symbolic half of one of the most important lessons in Montessori mathematics.
