Fabric Boxes

Description

The Fabric Box refines one of the most fundamental senses in early childhood: touch. Inside a handsome beechwood box sit eight pairs of fabric swatches: cotton, poplin, silk, satin, jute, gauze, felt, and velvet, each pair finished in its own distinct colour.

Working with eyes open at first, the child feels each swatch and searches for its matching pair by texture alone, comparing smooth against rough and soft against coarse, until every pair is correctly reunited. As confidence grows, the exercise can be repeated blindfolded, isolating the sense of touch completely and sharpening the child’s tactile discrimination far beyond what everyday handling would develop on its own.

Beyond the sensorial benefit, the Fabric Box is a quiet vocabulary lesson: children learn to name and distinguish real fabrics, the difference between silk and satin, felt and velvet, building descriptive language they will carry into conversation and, later, writing.
