Cylinder Blocks

Description

The Cylinder Blocks, sometimes called Knobbed Cylinders, are often a child’s first introduction to Montessori sensorial work, and one of the most important. Each of the four teakwood blocks is a solid rectangular prism with gently concave faces for a secure hold and a beautifully polished finish, and each holds ten cylindrical sockets graded along a single dimension.

Every cylinder is fitted with a small knob shaped precisely like a pencil grip, so that as the child lifts, matches, and replaces each piece, they are building the pincer grip, the same thumb, index, and middle finger coordination they will later use to hold a pencil. Visual discrimination comes first as the child judges sizes by eye; with practice, that judgement extends to touch alone.

Across the four blocks, the varied dimension changes: Block A varies in height only (5.5cm down to 1cm, in 0.5cm steps) with constant diameter; Block B varies in diameter only (5.5cm to 1.5cm) with constant height; Block C varies proportionately in both height and thickness; and Block D varies inversely, with height increasing as diameter decreases. This progression quietly introduces the language and logic of height, diameter, and proportion that later support mathematics.
