Brown Stairs

Description

The Brown Stairs bring the abstract idea of dimension into a child’s hands. The set consists of ten brown cuboids, each identical in length at twenty centimetres, but varying together in width and height, so that each ‘stair’ represents a perfect square number, from 1cm² through 10cm².

Arranged in sequence from thickest to thinnest, the prisms form a visual and tactile staircase. As the child builds, dismantles, and rebuilds the series, they develop an instinctive feel for gradation and proportion, along with the visual discrimination and muscular control that come from lifting and placing progressively larger blocks with precision.

Crafted from teak wood, the Brown Stairs isolate two dimensions at once and quietly prepare the child for later mathematical work with squares, cubes, and the decimal system, making the numbers 1 through 10 visible and touchable.
