Arrows for the 100 Chain

Description

The Arrows for the 100 Chain extend a child’s understanding of quantity beyond simple counting into the territory of squares and square roots, using the same colour-coded bead bars introduced earlier in the Montessori maths sequence. Short chains, built from bead bars of one through ten, are hung from a purpose-made wooden stand, and each chain is paired with a square built from the same number of beads.

By counting along each chain and comparing it to its corresponding square, the child sees, physically, how a number relates to its square and how that square relates to its root, an insight that is normally reserved for years later in a purely written form. A set of numbered arrows marks the multiples of each number as the child counts, giving structure and checkpoints to what would otherwise be a long, unguided count. It is precise, satisfying work that rewards patience and builds real number sense well ahead of formal instruction.
