Description

The Dot Game Board is where a child’s understanding of the decimal system meets real, multi-digit arithmetic, giving abstract carrying and place value a physical, visual home. Crafted from precision-cut hardboard, the board is laid out in clearly marked columns for units, tens, hundreds, thousands, and ten-thousands, each column divided into ten horizontal squares that mirror the exchange of ten for one that a child has already practised with bead material.

Working through an addition or other operation, the child marks dots in the upper section of each column as they work, then records the final result in the row below, an approach that makes the mechanics of “carrying over” visible rather than mysterious. An additional blank column on the right gives room for extra working or notes, so the board adapts comfortably to problems of varying complexity. It is a natural next step for children ready to move from bead-based, concrete operations towards the written, abstract calculations they will use for the rest of their schooling.
