The Addition Snake Game is where children move beyond simple addition into the deeper structure of number: bonds, tens, and the elegant relationship between counting and grouping. Designed for children aged five and up, it takes the colour-coded bead bars a child already knows from earlier Montessori maths work and uses them to build long, snaking chains of numbers that are then exchanged, ten by ten, into the golden decimal beads.

As the child lays down a “snake” of coloured beads and exchanges every group of ten for a golden ten-bar, they experience, in their hands, the exact moment addition becomes place value. It is a striking, almost game-like process that quietly cements number bonds, strengthens recall of addition facts, and lays early groundwork for understanding how addition and multiplication relate to one another. The result is a child who does not simply memorise that numbers make ten, but who has built ten, again and again, with their own hands.
