Touch Tablets

Description

The Touch Tablets narrow the tactile work of the Touch Boards into a precise grading exercise. Five matching pairs of tablets, each surfaced with a different grade of sandpaper from coarse to fine, are held in boxes designed so the child can lift and replace each tablet with ease, keeping the focus on the fingertips rather than on managing the material.

Working with eyes closed or a blindfold, the child pairs tablets by roughness and then arranges them in a graded sequence from roughest to smoothest, relying entirely on touch to make each judgment. This is a direct continuation of the preparation for writing begun with the Touch Boards, training the same light, controlled fingertip pressure a child will later need to hold a pencil well. It also refines the child’s vocabulary and understanding of roughness as a distinct, nameable quality, an early exercise in precise sensory description.
