Thermic Tablets – Small

Description

The Thermic Tablets (Small) teach the child that temperature is a property of material, not just of an object’s history in the sun or the fridge. Six pairs of tablets, each pair cut from a different material (felt, cork, wood, glass, slate, and steel), feel distinctly different to the touch because of how each material conducts heat away from the fingertip, even when all six pairs sit side by side at the same room temperature. The set is housed in a polished wooden box with six fitted compartments, one for each pair.

The child’s task is to pair tablets of matching material by feel alone, then notice and describe how each one feels different from the rest. The exercise refines the thermic sense with a precision that goes beyond hot-and-cold, introducing the more sophisticated idea that materials themselves carry a felt quality, an early, concrete step toward scientific observation and vocabulary building.
